Victory

Scout had a soccer tournament this weekend. Sometimes I think there is nothing more fun than watching your own kids play sports (or, I'm sure, watching their recitals or something). She had four games, and made it to the finals. The team they played had been playing together since they were five. They were big. They hadn't lost all season. And they played like you would expect yesterday. Scout's team has been playing together for 8 months. There are a few bigger players, but mostly average and some teensy (but fierce!). And they have only lost one game all season. So it wasn't quite David versus Goliath, but we were definitely the underdogs.

I was on the edge of my seat the whole game, biting my fingernails. It started out intense, with the other team scoring within the first two minutes. They had just destroyed teams the whole tournament, so we were nervous. But Scout's team fought back really hard! Scout scored a goal to even it up. It was a beautiful breakaway and she barreled through a defender almost twice her weight. Then the other team scored, and then Ella scored. The next half went scoreless and we had to go to overtime. Overtime went scoreless. Then they had to resort to penalty kicks. Each team had the chance for the best of 5. Scout went first and made her goal. Then the next team kicked and made hers. Then it went back and forth until the very last shot and they missed! It was so exciting. I think Scout will remember that game for a long time.
